How True

The only thing I would add to this post by Brendan Nyhan is the open collusion for political gains of the religious right and the conservatives. Religion does have its place in public policy, and people can be moved to do things for religious reasons. However, when they begin to view people who are not for their actions as evil, or heathens, or what have you, religion ceases to be a guide and becomes a dividing line, where everyone on the other side is wrong by defintion, and any hope of compromise goes out the window. Terri Schiavo leaps to mind, and the attempts to remove jurisdiction from Federal courts over the "Pledge of Alleigiance" case, and the introduced bills to state "God is the source of our laws" - which must surprise those who felt the people were.
